Water Ch. 4 - She Don't Know Me

(Circa 2011)She was finished meeting with clients and just wanted to go back to her room and sleep.  The little cat nap that she had taken with Jon left her even more exhausted, she thought.  She swung into Willy's and got a steak sandwich.  Lugged all of her stuff back up to her room, sat at the table and ate her lunch/dinner.  When she finished eating, she unpacked a few things after she decided she was only going to stay one more night.  She had planned on staying through the weekend and running over to Amanda's for an afternoon - but seeing Jon made her change plans.  She was heading back into the city in the morning - back to her corner of chaos, back to the life she made for herself.  In a city of over 5 million people, she could easily get re-lost and not have to worry about running into him again.  He didn't know where she was currently living, when he told her they were done - she was living in Los Angeles, CA.

He broke her heart the night they were to go to the Emmy's together.  It was a night she will never forget. A night she wishes she could forget.  It was the first night that they were to appear in public together.  She was devastated, humiliated and heart broken.  She wanted to die.  Rumors flew about her and Jon and they managed to keep their relationship private.  Beth didn't do that for Jon, she did it for herself.  She knew what she was getting into when she accepted his invitation to dinner, six years ago.

(Circa 2005)  Six years ago after Bon Jovi played a sold out show at The Staples Center in L.A.  Beth had VIP Backstage passes given to her as a birthday gift, so she and her best friend Amanda went.  They both loved the show, Amanda was a huge fan while Beth was a closet fan.

After the show, they went on their backstage tour.  There were several other women/girls on the same backstage tour, so Beth and Amanda hung back a little bit, while the others hurried ahead in anticipation that they might see something first.  Hanging back actually paid off for them.  As they lolly gagged their way through the tour, a roadie caught their attention.  He was getting ready to wheel a cargo case labeled JBJ Wardrobe onto a semi trailer.  Amanda was a fashion designer, on her own private label and loved all things fashion.  And who doesn't love the Jon Bon Jovi wardrobe.  Amanda stepped in front of this moving case and said to the long haired roadie, "Hey, can we have a look inside there real quick?"  The roadie didn't really know what to do.  He stopped the cart from hitting Amanda and politely said, "I really need to get this on the truck.  Sorry ladies, I can't."  Amanda never took no for an answer, well, neither did Beth.

"Come on, let us have a peek.  We won't touch anything, we promise.", Beth assured the roadie.  Not sure if it was Beth's blue eyes and blonde hair that made the roadie open the case or if the roadie just wasn't in the mood for begging.  The roadie reached over and unlatched the 2 latches holding the case closed, slowly opening it like a closet.  The girls were able to see some blue jeans, tshirts, a few long sleeved shirts and 1 leather jacket.  The Kenneth Cole leather jacket.  Beth loved that jacket.  The roadie stood there a little apprehensive, not knowing what the girls were going to do.  But they did as they said, they didn't touch a thing.  The roadie reached the point where he thought they had enough time to look and started to close the case.  Beth and Amanda both thanked him and turned around to go catch up with the group.  As Beth turned around, she spun right into another person.  Once she was sure footed she looked at who she so bluntly bumped in to and it was none other than Jon Bon Jovi himself.  Beth said, "OMG, excuse me, I am so sorry.  I didn't see you there." with a slight giggle.

"No, excuse me, I'm sorry I was in your way." said Jon to Beth with the grin on his face that millions of women would die to see.  Amanda stood there, very unsure of what to say or even do.  "I see you ladies were checking out my clothes?  Did you see anything you like?" As the roadie runs off with the case, getting it into the truck and getting himself out of Jon's way.  The roadie knew better about doing that, as there are very strict rules about what's allowed and what's not allowed backstage.  The roadie prayed he wouldn't get in trouble, and he didn't.

Beth said, "I love the Kenneth Cole jacket.  That was a smart design for you."  All while Amanda stands there and just agrees.  She is so smitten, she really can't talk.  Jon stood there with the 2 of them and treated them like he had known them forever.

"I like the design too, I was more than happy to add my name to that jacket." Jon proudly boasts about his 'name'.    He stands there with the girls for a few more minutes and they all hear, "Jon, let's go.  The car is waiting!"  Beth later realizes that that is his engineer and best buddy, Obie O'Brien.  Jon quickly turns around and tells Obie that he'll get the next one and to let the guys go on ahead.

"What did you ladies think of the show?  Jon asks, already knowing the answer.  Beth looks around for her backstage tour group and they were no where to be seen.  She wondered what they should do now.

"I loved the show, I absolutely loved it!' exclaims Amanda.  She surprised herself that she was able to talk.  "You guys did a great job with new album.  I loved it."  Was all Amanda could really get out.  Beth stood there and watched her as she seemed to be star struck.

Beth told Jon that she enjoyed the concert, and she thought the new album was going to be very successful.  Jon didn't need her to tell him that, he KNEW that.  Jon was curious to know why Beth wasn't 'speechless and in awe' of him, in his presence.  That intrigued him, he wanted to know more.

"We better get back to our group so we can finish the tour, come on Amanda." Beth was ready to move on.  She gently grabbed Amanda's arm and led the way - for the 10 steps that Jon let them get.

"Hey, wait." Jon says to the girls, "Come back here a minute."  They all walk toward one another.  Jon says, "What are your names?  You who I am, but I don't know who you are."

Amanda holds out her hand to introduce herself to Jon, "Hi, I'm Amanda Thomas"  Her and Jon shake hands.

"I'm Beth Adams."  Following Amanda's lead, she extends her hand. Jon grabs her hand and shakes it just a little bit longer than he did Amanda's.  Was Beth the only one that noticed that?  They stood there in an uncomfortable silence that Jon finally broke when he asked, "Are you doing any other shows?"

Any other shows?  Amanda shook her head no and said, "Not me.  I have a clothing line launch in a week and half.  I'm stuck here in L.A.  Beth travels for work, maybe she'll catch you in another city?"  Amanda nudges Beth.

Beth gave Amanda the 'how dare you' look and Jon looked at Beth, waiting for her response.  Beth told them both that she wasn't sure where work was sending her, so she couldn't say for sure.  Hell, she didn't pay for these tickets - she had no idea the expense of a Bon Jovi show.  She could afford it, but that isn't the issue.

"What do you do Beth, to where you travel?", inquires the rock star.  He wants to know more, and he doesn't know why.

"I am a commodities broker, with offices here and in New York.  That's my travel.  From L.A. to New York - and not many places in between."  she says, rather matter of fact.

"Well, we'll be in New York in two weeks.  You should stop in and see another show.  I would love to have you there, my guest."  Jon says to her with much excitement.  "Follow me girls."  Jon leads the girls into the wardrobe room where there are a few people hanging back, getting stuff packed up and together.  They stop when they get in there.  Jon walks up to a portly balding man and says, "Hey, give me some passes for New York."  The portly man that Beth will later find out to be Jon's manager turns around and says, "What kind of passes?"

"All access!"  Looking at Beth, he continues "how many will you need?"  Beth is like a deer caught in the headlights.

"Um, one I guess. I don't even know if I'll make it though.  I'm not sure of my schedule yet." she replies with a hint of sadness in her voice and alot of embarrassment.

"That's okay, if you don't use them that's fine.  You'll have them just in case."  Paul walks over and hands her a laminate on a lanyard that is all access to the entire area.  Beth thanks all of them and puts it in her purse.  How am I supposed to act, she thinks to herself?

Beth turns to leave, grabbing Amanda's arm and says, "We really should get going.  We have taken up enough of your time."  The girls start to walk out.

Jon stops them again and asks Beth, "Do you have a business card?"  Beth instantly thinks, hell yeah, a client as rich as Jon Bon Jovi would be sweet.  She reaches in her Birkin and hands him a card, never once gave it a thought that the info on it would be used for reasons other than business.  Jon looks at the card and is pleased with ALL the contact information that's on her card.  Looks at Beth and says, "You'll be hearing from me."

To not be rude or seem uninterested, Beth responds with, "I hope so."  And on that note, the girls let the arena and never finished the backstage tour.

They chatted and giggled over what they were just part of.  Amanda could not believe how Jon looked at and treated Beth.  Beth couldn't believe it either, but she wasn't going to act like the love struck groupie.  Beth secretly hoped he would call her, at the very least for business purposes.

Beth dropped Amanda off at her studio because she needed to get her line done, and the 4 hours she tied up at a Bon Jovi concert were 4 hours she really needed.  Amanda went in and went right to work.

The drive to Malibu wasn't very long, at this particular time of the night.  Beth had a few Bon Jovi CD's in her car, so she put one in.  Slippery When Wet was probably her favorite album and Wild Is The Wind, her favorite song. She jammed to SWW for the rest of the drive home.
Pulling into her driveway, she felt a sudden emptiness. There was no one waiting for her, no one excited she was home. With a heavy sigh she turned the car off and went inside. Kicked off her Jimmy Choo's and put her Birkin and keys on the counter. Glancing over she seen the answering machine was flashing and that shocked her. No one calls her home phone unless they can't reach her on her cell phone. She grabbed her purse to get her cell phone out and checked it for missed calls, texts or emails.  She had 1 text and 1 missed call. They both were from a number not familiar to her. She opened the text and it said 'It was a pleasure meeting you this evening. If you have a minute, could you please give me a call. Jon'. She stood there and just stared at the text, baffled. Thinking is this for real?  She sets her phone down and goes over to listen to her messages.   One was a hang up and the other was Jon.  Simply asking for her to return his call.  She deleted the hang up message and saved the other one.  And then went on with her evening.

She had some paperwork to finish up, so she grabbed her laptop case, a bottle of Pinot out of the wine cooler and a glass and made her way into the dining room.  She set herself up at the table and began doing what she needed.  The first glass of Pinot went down pretty smooth, so she poured another.  She was able to breeze through the paperwork she needed to get done.  When she finished she went into the bathroom and got ready for bed.  She had had a long day and wanted nothing more than to climb into her sea of blankets.

  1. Now that is one way to meet Jon. I love the background on Jon and Beth. Looks like Jon was smitten with her from the start.
