Water Ch. 134 - Hearts Breaking Even

Coming to consciousness after his momentary black out from hitting his head on the door, he looks over and sees Beth, unconscious. "Beth, Beth, Beth."  he reaches over and shakes her shoulder.  "Beth!"  Nothing.  She doesn't move a muscle and she is totally unresponsive.

"BETH!"  He shakes her a little harder.  Again, nothing.  He quickly looks around and sees that there are many passersby and many on lookers, and one man comes up to help.
"Man, are you okay?"  He asks Jon as he approaches the car.  Jon reaches down to undo his seat belt to get out, Beth needed his help.  But the crash locked his seat belt and he wasn't able to unfasten it.

"Help her."

The good Samaritan looks at the wreck for a minute and sees that the only way to help her is to climb into the backseat.  The car that barrelled into them was still in her door, and she was pinned, with the dashboard on her legs.  Jon knew he had help her.  He's finally free of the seat belt and he turns in his seat and gets up on his knees.  He reaches over and says it again, "Beth, come on baby.  Beth."  shaking her a little more.

Jon is relieved when the the firefighters and ems arrived on scene.  One firefighter goes to Jon's side and says, "Sir, are you alright?"

With panic in his voice, he says, "Please help her.  She's pregnant."

"We will get to her, are you alright?  Did you lose consciousness?"

"Get her out." he's getting a little louder.  By this time, he has been identified by EMS and firefighters, and with his name said over the police and fire scanners - reporters from all over the area are in route to the scene.

The firefighters manage to separate the vehicles and they see that Beth is pinned and they will need to use the jaws of life to get her out.  The kid that hit them has a few cuts and scrapes but is otherwise okay.

Inside the car, Jon is growing more anxious.  He continues to say her name,  rub her face and beg her to wake up.  "Come on baby, wake up.  I can't do this again.  Beth, wake up."

She begins to move her head.  She tries to open her eyes, but it hurts.  Squinting and blinking fast, she tries to look around.  "Brian." she mumbles.  "Brian."

That was a punch in the gut to Jon, but he didn't care.  "Beth, stay still.  There going to get you out."  he grabs her hand and is really getting scared.

"Sir, we need your help."

"What?  Anything."

"We need you to climb in back and hold her head.  We have to cut her out and we need to to not move her head until we can get a collar on her."  Jon didn't need to be told twice.  He wiggled his way out of his seat and climbed in the back as fast as he could.  The medic on the outside gave him instructions and Jon did what he was told.

"Beth, I'm here.  I'm here.  You're going to be okay." he tells her, trying to sound convincing, he's not sure it's working.

"What happened?"  she mumbles to him.  "Jon, what happened."  She seemed to have been a little less disoriented and  aware.

"We've been in an accident.  Hold still, okay.  It won't be much longer."

The firemen are ready to cut the top off of the car.  They tell Jon and Beth what's going to happen and prepare the Denali for further destruction.  They shroud the two of them with protective blankets and they cut the top off of the car.

"Jon, I feel like I peed my pants." And she starts to cry, "I can't  move my legs."

The loud noise from the jaws of life drowned out her cries and he couldn't hear what she said.  He holds her head in place and waits for it to end.  Once the have the top off, an EMT climbs into the back with Jon and takes over holding her head, she applied a cervical collar.  "Sir, can you go to the ambulance, we will bring her there in just a few minutes."

"Jon, don't leave me." She puts her hand up, and he grabs it.

"I'm here baby.  I'm not going anywhere."  he looks to the EMT and follows with, "Can we get her out now?"

"Ma'am, are you feeling any pain?" the EMT asks Beth.

"My head, my feet and my legs.  Please get me out.  I feel like I peed my pants."

The EMT looked to Jon, with the look like, "Okay?' on her face.  Jon said, "She's pregnant with twins."

The word pregnant always seemed to speed things up when it came to injury or illness.  The EMT that's in the back of the Denali with Jon yells to her partner, "We gotta get her out and get her out now.  She's pregnant."

Firefighters and EMS had Beth out of the car in less than five minutes from when they arrived on scene.  They slide her out on a board and put her on a stretcher, leaving Jon  behind.  He looks upfront for her purse and his personal things and sees the blood on her seat.  His heart sinks.  With the stuff that they needed he climbed out and was practically slapped in the face by all the reporters and fans that have gathered.  Never noticed them in the back of the car and wished he hadn't seen them now.  He runs to the waiting ambulance and jumps in.

They are rushed to the hospital and taken straight to the OB floor.  Medics called ahead do they were waiting for her.  The first thing they do is hook up a fetal heart monitor to her and listen for heartbeats. It took the obstetrician a few minutes to find them, but they were they and they were strong.  Jon immediately cries and sighs a huge sigh of relief.  He moves closer to her and puts his lips on her forehead, she can feel his tears falling on her face. She puts her arms around his neck and she cried with him.  The doctor tells them, as cold as humanly possible, that he sees a small bleed and that it's nothing to worry about.  He looked at everything that he could and he's pretty sure it will go away with rest.  He leaves, leaving them alone for a few minutes and comes back with the ER physician.  They want to do an MRI on her for her loss of consciousness, and Jon too - he refuses until she is taken care of.  Beth's MRI comes back clean as does Jon's.

They are in her room waiting for further testing or release information when his mother bursts in the room.  "Oh my God, I seen your accident on the news. Jonny, why didn't you call me?"  She runs up and hugs her son and then hugs Beth.

"Ma, how did you find out we were here?" Jon questions but knows the answer as soon as he asks. "The news."

"I can't believe either of you walked away from that. The crash was terrible. How are the babies?"

Beth smiles and tells Jon's mom, "Their heartbeats are strong."

"Good, good." She rubs Beth's foot. "I thought I was going to have a heart attack driving here, your father is with the kids."

"We're fine mom. We had some tests and everything is good." Jon reassures his mother.  "Did the kids see it?"

His mother shakes her head yes and tells them, "I called before I came and convinced the ER doctor that I was really your mom and he gave me the information. I was able to tell the kids that  you both were okay before I left. Steph wants you to call her."

"I will.  As soon as we find out what they are doing. We're not sure what they are going to do, regarding her bleeding. Waiting on the doctor."

Mom stands up straighter and says, "Do you want me to go get one?"

"No ma, sit down.  They are doing a great job. Leave them alone."

Beth asks Jon, "What happened? I can't remember the crash at all?"  She's tried to recall, but the only thing that comes to mind was the spoons. They were talking about the spoons. Beth was feeling herself get upset and then realized that she was not helping her situation. She's going to let it go for now.

Jon sits next to her on the bed and she does what feels natural. She rests her head on his chest and starts to cry some more.

"We were on our way back home, so you could nap and we were broadsided, on your side.  What do you remember?" He wants to fill in the blanks for her.

"The first thing I remember is being covered for them to cut me out of the car.  Was the person that hit us okay!?!"

He starts to run his fingers through her hair and let's her know, "It was a teenage boy and he's fine. A few bumps and bruises.  But, okay."

"Good. I'm glad. Can we turn on the news?" Beth wants to see if there is footage of the scene.

Mrs. B gets up and flips the TV on and there it was, news coverage of their accident.  The reporter, spicing up what really happened, says "Jon Bon Jovi and his on again off again mistress narrowly escaped death when they were tragically hit by another motorist in New Jersey today.  Bon Jovi's mistress had to be rescued by firefighters using the jaws of life.  Both were rushed to the area hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.  Sources tell us that Beth's injuries were more severe than Bon Jovi's and she may be kept for observation."  While she's listening to the words coming out of the television, she's seeing images of Jon climbing into the backseat and helping her, doing as the medics tell him. Ripped shirt and a big bump on the side of his head.  Her tears roll down her face and Mrs. B watches with her hand over her mouth, in awe of her son and his love for the woman that laid with him in that hospital bed.

A few moments later they are greeted by the ER doc.  "Beth, I'm going to let you go home, with conditions.  Those conditions are 1. Stay in bed. Bed rest until your OB tells you otherwise. 2. No sex, until the bleeding stops. 3. Lift nothing heavier than a coffee cup. 4. No aspirin or aspirin containing products.  I cannot stress enough, bed rest! We think what you have going on in there is a hematoma and we think it will go away, with bed rest. Keep taking your vitamins, and stay hydrated.  Am I clear?  Any questions?"

Instantly Beth asks, "Are the babies okay?  A hematoma, what do you mean?  Isn't that a bruise?"

"You have had a small part of your placenta detach from your uterine wall, and that's what's causing the bleeding.  In a week or so, it should grow back, kind of like a scab and the bleeding will stop.  The babies look great.  Hearts are strong and they are right where they are supposed to be.  Make an appointment with your OB as soon as you feel up to it.  We don't want to go looking in there while you have an active bleed, that would just invite bacteria and cause many more issues.  Just go home and rest."

Beth and Jon look at each other like they are characters in a never ending horror movie.  Neither one really knows what to say.  The doctor hands Beth her discharge papers and  excuses himself.  Beth asks, "What do I wear home?  They cut my clothes off?"  She and  Jon both are stumped.

Mrs. B jumps in and says, "Wait right here, Jon go get my car and pull it around tot he ambulance door; there should be less reporters over there."  And away she went.  Beth looked at Jon like, you better go do what she says.

Jon put his jacket on and kissed her, many times on the lips and her face.  Resting on the crown of her dirty hair, and he tells her, "This is it, okay?  No more.  You are going to be the death of me."

She reaches up and puts her hand on his head, laughs at him and says, "You don't mean until next time?"  He didn't really find that funny, not at all.

With his stance firm and his tone tough he tells her, "You have no idea what bed rest is going to be like.  No idea at all.  If I have to, I will chain you to the bed.  I'm gonna go get the car, I'll see you downstairs."  One last kiss and he's out the door, but he's met with his mother.  She has a robe from the maternity ward gift shop in her hands.  Beth can see that she's telling Jon what to do and where and he turns and leaves.

"Come on dear, I"ll get you down to the car.  We'll just wrap this around you sneak out the side door."  She snaps open the robe and Beth slowly stands to put it on.  Beth can now feel how sore she really is and it takes her back to the Bahama's.  She hurt like hell there, and she hurts like hell now.

Easing the robe on, she tells Mrs. B "Thank you."

"Dear, you don't ever have to thank me.  I will do anything for my kids, and you're one of my kids."  She brushes some bangs out of Beth's face and continues with, "There's a wheel chair right out side the door, can you make it?"  Grabbing the rest of Beth's things.

Beth nods yes, and they get to the chair.  Beth slowly sits down and Mrs. B starts to wheel her to the elevator.

Jon manages to get out of the hospital and to his mother car, unseen.  However, when he pulls into the ambulance bay to pick Beth and his mother up, he's not so lucky.  He runs in and meets up with them just inside the door.  Stopping the chair, Beth says "I'll walk, I don't want pictures of me in a wheel chair all over the place.  That would just give them more fuel."  She stands up and Jon goes a little bit ahead of her, to stop any potential problems.  There are a few reporters and fans on the side of the hospital, and aside from taking their pictures - they went unbothered.

Mrs. B drove her son and his future wife to their home in Red Bank.  Making sure they get in okay and don't need anything, she tells her son, "The kids will stay with me and dad for a few days.  You take care of her, Jonny.  And when she's better, I'll bring the kids home.  Dawn is already working on your car, so don't worry about that.  If you need anything CALL ME."  A few more minutes of chit chat and she was out of there.  Jon loved his mother and many times has wondered what he'll do without her, when she's gone.

Beth creeps her way upstairs and heads right into the shower.  She washes her self from head to toe, twice - still unable to get that smell gone.  She knows it's all in her head, but just the same - she needed to try.  While she showered, he sat on the tub the entire time.  He could see bruises starting to form on her right side.  He right thigh was starting to look like someone had beat her with a baseball bat, her right shoulder was looking pretty close to her leg.  "Are you in alot of pain, babe?"  he asks, wanting to help if he can.

"No, it's more of an ache.  It's not alot of pain.  I just need to lie down, I'm exhausted."  she admits she's had enough.  "How do you feel?  It looks like you hit your head pretty hard."

"I have a slight headache, but I'm fine.  Do you want me to get you anything?"

"No, just a towel.  Please."

Jon stands and reaches for a towel.  She turns the water off and steps to the back of the open shower, reaching for her towel.  He hands it to her and helps her step out of the shower.  The tub and shower are separate.  The shower has a wall of glass half of the way back and Jon helps her off of the wet slippery tile.  She's on the bathroom rug, trying to dry herself off and she just doesn't have the energy.   "Can you dry me off?"

He takes the towel and gently dries her milky flesh, paying extra attention to the black and blue mark that were there.  When her body is dry, he grabs another towel and wraps her in it and helps her to the bed.  With the blankets drawn back, and he side of the bed waiting for her, she does what she's supposed to do.  She lays down.  Jon covers her, the way she likes to be covered.  Half way up, not all of the way to her neck.  She gets to hot.  She no sooner has her eyes closed and the phones started to ring.  Both cell phones and the house phone.
