Water Ch. 77 - Save A Prayer

The night spent in the hospital was especially long for Jon. He had trouble getting comfortable and he kept thinking about what Beth said about him being the first that hasn't let her down. 'What did she mean?' He thinks out loud? Has she always been so alone that even the simplest of gestures mean so much? 'She has to know what she means to me, for gods sake.'

He rolls on his side and faces his sleeping beauty. With the tip of his index finger, he gently moves hair that's fallen on her face as she slept. He looks over her face, smiling at her freckles. She has a few on her nose and her cheeks. Jon loves freckles. He slowly leans in and kisses her nose, and quietly tells her, "I love you Beth Ann. You have no idea what you have done to and for me. I swear forever, and I'll never let you down!" He can feel himself getting sleepy so he snuggles in close with Beth. The weight of the last couple of days is really playing on him and he just needs a good nights sleep. And tonight could be the night.

The doctors were in to see Beth and the drop of blood on Beth's bed wasn't alarming and he changed the subject that concerned the show he cancelled. All is well in Camp BonJovi:San Diego.

Seven a.m. came a little too soon for Jon and Beth both. A doctor they haven't seen yet comes in and flips the light on with a loud 'Good Morning!' Beth struggles to get up on her elbows to say hello and she can't do it. Someone is sleeping on the arm of her nightgown. So, she reaches over shakes Jon and says, "Hey baby, get up!" Jon rolls over and covers his eyes because the lights are so bright.

He manages to muster up, "I'm up, I'm up." and he sits up. He opens his eyes and sees the strange man in the white coat, "Can we help you?"

With an outreached hand, the man in the white coat says, "I'm Dr. Timpson, Neurologist from UCLA. Dr. Halloran requested that I come see you. So here I am." The doctor and Jon shake hands and so do Beth and the doctor.

Grabbing her chart off the end of her bed he asks, "May I?"

"Of course, please." Beth tells him, hoping this doesn't take too long, she wants to go home.

He looks over paper after paper, with the occasional 'I see' and 'Mmhhh', leaving Jon and Beth to wonder what he's thinking. Neither want to ask him, for fear that they would distract him.

After what felt like a lifetime, Dr. Timpson looked at Beth and asked, "How do you feel now?"

Her gut response is her best. She tells the doctor, "I'm starving. My tummy is grumbling. That's how I'm feeling." She laughs and goes on, "My head feels fine. The pain meds took care of the headache."

"Any dizziness or feeling sick to your stomach?" he asks.

Beth pulls her hair into a ponytail and says, "Nope to both."

Jon stands up and gets out of the doctors way. "I'm going to go to the restroom, I'll be right back, babe." And her rock star disappears into her bathroom.

The doctor continues with Beth's neurological exams, he has her squeeze his fingers to see if both side have any loss of strength - she passes. He has her push against him, pull away from him. He does that with both her hands and feet. Dr. Timpson is pleased with the results.

The exam continues with some questions. Who are you? Where are you? What day is it? Who's the President? Beth answered all of them correctly and that pleases Dr. Timpson. Being satisfied with the results with his physical exam, he puts his hand on Beth's shoulder and tells her, "Miss Adams, you are cleared for eating breakfast. Do you want me to order you a tray?"

Beth says, "No, I think Id like something fresh, maybe I'll head down to the cafeteria?" she's ready. She wants a cup of coffee and some fresh fruit, maybe even a little yogurt.

"When you're done eating, I want another CAT scan done and if that's clear, you'll be freed for take off." Smiling at her, he knows she doesn't want to be there.

Jon emerges from the bathroom and Beth is giddy with excitement. She's jumping up and down on the bed, beaming from ear to ear. "Honey, I get to eat! And after a CAT scan, I get to go home. Jon, I get to go home." He walks up to her and gives her a celebratory hug and kiss.

"That's awesome. When is the test and what do YOU want to eat? I'll get you whatever you want." he tells her and he means every word.

Dr. Timpson says, "I'll leave you to your breakfast and I will come back in when I see the results of the scan. I'm pretty sure they will show nothing, but I want you both to be reassured. Excuse me." and Dr. Timpson leaves the room.

Jon focuses the attention back on Beth. Even though she is in that awful hospital gown he asks her if she wants to go down to the cafeteria and pick what she wants. She nods yes, as says, "I want to brush my hair and teeth first, can you help me get into the bathroom?"

"Of course I can. You don't even have to ask." he goes over to her and eases her to the end of the bed. The full leg cast is heavy and cumbersome and she needs help getting it off the bed. Jon gets her upright, waiting a few seconds for her blood to circulate and he aids her into the bathroom. She emptied her bladder, brushed her teeth and brushed her hair. She was ready.... "Ok, let's go! I need coffee."

Jon is going to piss her off, but he has to ask, "Do you want me to get a wheel chair babe? It will make it so much easier." He cringes, waiting for the blows. He ended it up getting a surprise.

"You're right. That might not be a bad idea. I can carry trays that way. Think we can find one?" she looks up at her rock star.

"I'll go get one right now. Be right back." and he disappears. She sits on the edge of the bed and waits. Looking around she sees Jon's bag and her Prada purse. She wondered what else he grabbed off the yacht. He's in the same clothes....where is the yacht?

First thing she sees is the wheelchair and her man behind it. He pulls it up to her and says, "Your chariot awaits, my lady." And he reaches over to help her in.

He pushes her to the elevator and she asks him, "Do I look alright? I don't want the press to get a bad pic of me."

"Honey, considering what you have been through, you look absolutely amazing! Stop worrying about the press and what people think. Please!" he's firm but he means it.

"Ok, ok. Lets go, I'm starving here!"

Jon pushes her out into the hallway and over to the elevator. The elevator takes them down to the cafe and Beth fills two trays with food and beverage. Juice for both of them, coffee for both and many breakfast dishes. Once the trays are done, they go back up stairs and eat.

Just as Beth finishes eating, an orderly walks in ready to take Beth for the test. She uses the wheelchair one last time. She wants the test done and she wants to get home.

Test is done and she returns to her room. Jon is there on his cell phone. As soon as she enters the room she hears him say, "She's back. I'll call you later. Ok, bye." And he hangs up. "Well?"

All Beth could say is that it was over and now they have to wait for the doctor read it.

"Jon, I see your bag and my purse. Did you grab anything else?"

"No, I grabbed all I could see, I was running on fear. Do you need something?" he asks her, feeling a little bad now.

She laughs at him and says, "Should I leave her in a bikini. Press might love it." She's still laughing.
"I'll call and order you something. Yeah it would be silly to leave in a bikini." He got quite for a minute and said, "As a matter of fact. I think they cut it off you to assess you in the chopper. Worst case, I have an extra shirt in my bag. You could wear it as a dress."  now he's laughing at her.

"I need something to wear out of here, what do you have in your little bag over there, Mr. Bon Jovi?" Beth asks, hoping he has more than the Philly Soul shirt he held up.

Jon leaves over and rummages through his bag and pulls out a plain black t-shirt, "Will this work?"

She laughs and says, "I look better in black that I do brown, I'll wear that and I can steal a pair of scrub bottoms." She reaches for the tshirt and he tosses it to her.  Removing the hospital gown, she puts on her rock stars black tshirt and feel just a little better.  Step by step, she was getting close to going home.  She's happy about that!  "Could you find me some scrub pants, Jon?  I think a small will work." She smiles at him.

"I sure will.  Back in a minute."  He gets up to leave the room and stops as he hits the door.  He turns around, remebering he needed to kiss her, even if he was only going down the hall for scrubs.  Walking over to her, he gives her a look like she might be in a little bit of 'trouble'.  He squats down in front of her and says, "I love you.  I want you to know that.  I also want you to know how scared, wait, how terrified I was when I found you unconscious.  Honey, I about had my own heart attack."  He shakes his head, gently places her face in the palms of his hands and continues with, "I thought I lost you."

She sees the pain in his eyes and the change in his facial feature and places his face in her palms and she says, "Do you really think you could get rid of me that easily?"  And she smiles at him, hoping to break the tension that's in the air.

"I don't think you realize what I was going through.  When I couldn't wake you up, I didn't know what to do.  I was lost, confused and terrified.  I really though there was something very wrong with you.  Had it not been for the coast guard, I can't say where you would be right now."  He puts his head in her lap and she runs her finger nails through his hair, hoping she is able to clam him down a little bit.

"Hey, I can imagine what you went through and how you were feeling, honey.  I'm sorry that it happened, but we made it through.  That's all we need to focus on.  We made it out the otherside and I'm going to be fine.  And I want you to know that I am so thankful that I was with you when it happened, I mean what if I had flown home and was along in my house.  It could have been days before anyone knew something was wrong." she takes a deep breath and continues, "If I wasn't on that yacht with you, the outcome could very well have been different.  Thank you for saving my life.  There is no way I could ever repay you for that."

He lifts his head and can see small tears in her eyes, and whenever she cries, he does the tried and true method of making Beth feel better.  He reaches up and kisses the tears from each eye, kisses her nose and finds her lips.  One peck, two pecks....tongue.  Jon kisses her as if he's kissing her for the very first time.  He's tender, gentle and very receptive to her reations, loving that she's placced her arms around his neck, pulling him and his tongue in even closer.  The kisses feel fresh and new to both of them, and they are enjoying getting to know one another all over again, orally.

Knock. knock They were startled and they stopped kissing, both look to the door.  It's Dr. Timpson with Beth's scan film in his hand.

"Come in." Beth says.

The Dr. walks in and says, "Well, I have good news and I have bad news.  What do you want first?"  Beth and Jon both have their stomachs drop to their feet as they look at one another.  Beth can see the horror on Jon's face and he has to see the edge of a breakdown on Beth's face.

"The bad first." mumbles Beth.  Not wanting anything that was bad.  Jon stis next to her on the bed and wraps his arms around her.
"We got this babe, no matter what it is.  We will get through it, together."  Jon kisses her cheek and they turn their attention to Dr. Timpson.

"Relax, Beth is going to be just fine.  That's the good news.  With some medication she can leave here and get back to life as she knows it.  No lifestyle changes are needed, or anything like that.  The bad news I was referring to is, we have a leak in the hospital.  The whole world knows that you're here, Jon and the paparazzi are here, in full force.  They actually have the whole place surrounded.  So sneaking you out the back door will be pointless."  The doctor laughs, as he's never had a situation like this before and he isn't sure how to handle it.  "We have called out PR guy and he's calling the local PD to stand by so you can get into your car without hassle, but that will take a few minutes."  Handing Beth her discharge papers, and a pen the doctor waits for Beth to read them over and sign them.  She does just that.  The doctor explaines the medication that she needs to take for the next 7 days, Warfrin, to thin her blood and keep any and all clots moving.  Beth grasps that concept and agrees to take it as ordered.

"Well, I guess my work is done here.  Beth, my numbers are on all of your paperwork.  If you have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call me, anytime."  He extends his hand and Jon shakes it first.

"Hey, doc - I just want to thank you for coming in to see her.  We know that this is not your hospital and that you did it as a favor to Dr. Halloran, but none the less, thasnk you.  If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know."  Jon passes the hand shake and gives the doctor a nice gentleman hug, pats him on the back, "Thank you."

"Yes, doctor, thank you for coming in here and taking a look at my case.  It was a little scary to think about being let go without a specialist looking at it.  We appreciate your time and your effort in this.  If there is anything, either of us can do, please let us know." Beth adds, with her anticipation growing because she gets to go home.  Since the fall in St. Bart's, that's all she's wanted to do.

Jon had a thought and it made him ask Dr. Timpson, "Can Beth fly?"
"Fly? What are you talking about?  I'm not going anywhere." Beth interjects.
The doctor not wanting to be in the middle of a lovers quarell simply states, "She is able to go in an airplane, that is perfectly alright.  Now, if you'll excuse me - I hear a golf course calling my name."  Dr. Timpson nods and is out the door.

"Ok babe, let's get out of here." Jon reaches for Beth's hand.  He helps her stand and waits for her to get her balance, and asks her, "Are you all right?"

"Yeah, I'm good.  I think I can walk down." and she heads toward the door.  Jon has his bag and her purse in one hand, and Beth's hand in the other.  They walk to the elevator in silence, since everyone knew they were there, what they said could be heard.  In the elevator, Jon made eyes at Beth and was teasing her with his tongue.  She would laugh and tell him to stop, but the harder she laughed, the more he would do it.

Getting off the elevator and aroung the corner to the enterance, was easy - getting out of the door was going to be the tricky part.  As they approached the door, the outsiders could see they were headed to the door and they scurried to get there first.  Scurried to get the first pictures, the first answer.

Beth and Jon went to the door that was surrounded by San Diego's finest in law enforcement.  As soon as the door opened, the police officer's created a human shield around the two of them to protect their personal space.  There was a car waiting for them and they both practically dove in.  Once inside and abe to cathc their breath, Jon told the driver it was okay to go.

Pulling through the madness of people that were outside of the hospital was pretty easy.  Blaring a horn until people moved seemed to be the key.  Onto the street they went and Jon and Beth settled in for the two hour ride to L.A.  Beth leaned toward tne door and propped her legs up on Jon's legs.  He rubbed the one that wasn't covered in plaster and told her that she needed a pedicure.  She laughed at him and said, "Well, I guess you can do that tonight."  They both got a chickle out of that.

They were out of the hospital, they were together.  What more could they want?  Heading to L.A. was an answered prayer for Beth, since all she wanted to do was go home.  Jon on the other hand, he had other things on his mind.  He had things that she said, really eating at him.  He needed to know more about her.

He thinks that hiring that private detective was one of the best decisions he's made.  He's hoping to learn more about the woman that talks so little about herself.  He hopes that he can see into the mystery and see why she is so distant from her family.  He needs to know Beth.  All of Beth.
