Water Ch. 159 - I Swear I'd Sell My Soul To Be A Hero For You

Weeks went by and there wasn't any communication between Jon and Beth.  She was so heart broken, she put her home on the market, changed her cell phone number and even quit her job.  It was her intention to be unreachable to Jon.  It was now her life, her rules.  She had babies to prepare for and she didn't want any more set backs or upsets between now and their due date.

She had found a new house and had her things moved.  When she decided on a nursery theme, she had painters come in and paint.  She needed the distraction of decorating, so that's what she did.  With little girls on the way, she wanted the theme to be delicate and pretty, but it needed to fit in pictures of their daddy and his family.  Beth took the time to go through many photos and pick out some of Jon and his children.  The girls will know all about their dad and their siblings.  Beth is hoping that the girls will know their siblings, not just know about them.

The finishing touches are added to the nursery and Beth started to interview for a housekeeper/nanny.  It wasn't something that she wanted to do, but she knew she would need the help.  It's not a decision that she will make in an instant, she knows it's going to be a long process.  She had time.  She had plenty of time.  Many of the applicants were young and Beth didn't like the idea of a young woman taking care of her daughters, she eliminated men just by names.  She knew that she wouldn't allow a man to take care of her daughters, based on a feeling that she had.  There were several older women that had sent in their CV and there were a couple of those that Beth liked.  She made plans to interview, but let the ladies know that she wouldn't decide for quite a while, and they were willing to wait for the position.  The thought of someone else taking care of her babies made her squirm.

Beth was calling it a day.  Routine ultrasound tomorrow and she was pretty excited about it.  She wants to see clearer images and see how big they have grown.  She went through her nightly routine and climbed into bed.  She turned the TV on, wanting to catch up on current events and she seen a commercial for X-tra.  An entertainment show that aired nightly.  The announcer said 'After local news........Jon Bon Jovi hitting the road for a small intimate tour."  Her heart hit the floor, bumping both knees on the way down.  She couldn't believe she had just heard his name.  She sat there and stared at the TV, waiting for X-tra o start.  The news was almost over.  A few more minutes of sports and a weather recap and it was time.  She needed to know when and where he was going to be.

The show starts and they work their way to the story of Jon and his tour.

"Singer Jon Bon Jovi hitting the road for a small intimate tour, showcasing material from the upcoming Bon Jovi album.  Jon Bon Jovi known for his stadium shaking rock anthems has been out of the public eye since the debacle with his wife Dorothea and mistress, Beth Adams.  Dates to be announced this Friday."  During the story, pictures of Jon, Beth and Dorothea flashed.  X-tra had gotten their hands on one picture from Matt's birthday party that showed Jon and Beth hugging, with Romeo at their legs.  Beth's eyes teared up.  She missed her little man - hell, she missed all of them.  The show was over and Beth clicked the TV off.  Placing the remote on the nightstand, she looks at the picture she put out of her and the Bongiovi children.  She smiles although her heart is breaking.  She has fond memories of those kids and hopes that they are adjusting well.  She has no idea how Dorothea is doing, she can only hope that she is doing okay too.  Beth doesn't let herself get too concerned with Dot.  She is still quite bitter and doesn't want to waste the time and energy on worrying about someone that hurt her so bad.

Beth lays there in the quiet and deals with her thoughts.  Thoughts like, Where is Jon going to be at?  Why is he doing this solo?  Why did he drop off of the radar?  What is going on with him?  She really wonders if he's okay, and she thinks about him many times in a day.  But she tries to keep her thoughts and her mood happy, knowing that stress and anger can affect fetal development.  She wants the girls surrounded by love and happiness, because she is determined that that is what they are going to grow up with.  Beth is finally able to drift off to sleep.  She needed the rest, she wanted the dreams.

Jon kisses the kids goodbye and tells Lupetta, "Call me if you need anything.  I left a copy of their sport schedules on the fridge.  Please make sure Romeo brushes his teeth good, he tries to get it over too quick.  Dorothea is not to come in the house, or pick up the children.  If they go visit her, please call them a car or take them yourself.  I don't want them in a car with her driving."  He taps his head, knowing that he's forgetting something.  "Oh, if you need help with anything and I can't be any help, call Matty.  He can run right over here. I know I'm forgetting something............"  Lupetta laughs at him.  "What's so funny?"

"You're nervous.  I think it's funny." she admits.

He laughs with her, "Yeah, I am.  It's only a 20 day run, thank god.  Make sure that they make it to my mom's on Sunday for dinner - or she'll kill you."

"Dad, will you go already?"  Stephanie blurts out. "Pete is taking us for ice cream."

"Okay, Okay I'm going."  he kisses all of their heads again, grabs his bag and leaves.  There was a care waiting to take him to the airport.  Bag is in the back and he is on his way, to Seattle.  He's starting on the west coast and working his way east.  Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Orlando, Charlotte, East Rutherford and New York City.  All great cities, with great turn outs for anything he does.  Fans embraced him in these cities and he needed to feel the love.  On the Bon Jovi jet, he's on his way to Seattle.

The Seattle show is going better than Jon could have ever hoped, even though it was a daytime show.  The audience of 1500 loved the new material he was playing.  He took time and talked between songs, and he's realizing that he has missed being on the road.

Beth arrives at the doctor 15 minutes early, like always.  As soon as the receptionist seen it was Beth, she brought her back to a room and told her the nurse would be with her in a few minutes.

"Thank you."  Beth replies, taking the paper blanket from the receptionist.

"You know the drill."

"Yep, I do.  Thanks."

And the receptionist leaves the room.  A few minutes later, the doctor enters, with an intern.  Beth doesn't like that, she trusts no one and to have a student using her as a guinea pig didn't set right with her.  But she will give it a shot.

The doctor pulls out the foot rest and tells Beth, "Lie back."  And she does.  "This shouldn't be cold, but it's possible."

"That's okay.  Let's get a look at these beauties." she tells the doctor, with an anxious laugh.

He goops up her belly and positions the wand.  Beth can see images coming into focus, she can see her daughters.  There are more tears.  The doctor continues with the wand, moving it all over, looking up from angles, down from angles and starts to take measurements.  He also snapped pictures and looked at them as they printed.  Beth is fixated on the screen, watching everything she can and trying to make out what she is looking at.  Her heart is racing, because she is feeling a feeling she hasn't yet felt.  She is elated, beyond happy - she is in awe.

"Have the girls been active?" he asks Beth.

"Yeah, at night.  Why?"  she turns to look at him.

"It's probably nothing, but I want to do this vaginally. I'm not able to see their heartbeats and it's probably just positioning."  He rubs her arm, trying to reassure her, but it's not working.

In the meantime, the intern is getting the vaginal wand out of it's sterile container and hooks it into the ultrasound machine.  Once the doctor is ready, he inserts the probe into Beth and searches for the heartbeat.

"Take a deep breathe.  Relax." he puts his hand on her knee.  Moving the probe up and down, left and right he is unable to find the heartbeats.  He doesn't want to break this news to her, but he had too.
"Beth, I'm not able to detect a heartbeat."

Freaking out, she asks, "What does that mean?  Keep looking."

"There are no heartbeats, there is no blood flow through the cord either, I'm sorry."

"What are you telling me?  What's going on?"  The doctor removes the probe and lets her sit up.

With a look of sadness on his face, he tells her, "Your pregnancy is no longer viable."

She freezes.  She can't think a clear thought, but she's able to mumble, "Are they dead?"

"I'm sorry."

Shaking her head, not believing this she asks him, "How does this happen?  Are you sure?  Is there another way to look?  Doctor, what the hell happened?"

"The only way we can find out is to remove them and send them to the lab.  These things happen for many reasons, sometimes we never know the real cause.  But let's focus on what we need to do, we need to schedule you for a D & C to remove the fetuses.  Before they get you sick.  I don't want to put you through labor." Beth is just staring at him, feeling like she is in a nightmare, that she can't wake up from.  "Is there someone you need me to call?"

She shakes her head no.  "I'm going to go see how soon we can do this, I'll be right back."  The doctor goes out, with the intern and checks the schedule.  They could do her D&C on Thursday, today is Monday.

He gives Beth her surgery schedule and asks if he can be of any assistance.  Beth, still dazed and totally confused shakes her head no and asks, "Are you sure there isn't any heartbeat?  In either of them?"

"I'm sorry, but there isn't one.  Are you going to be able to get home alright?"

Beth nods yes and waves them off.  She sits there for well over 10 minutes before she gets up and cleans up.

In her car, she calls Jon.  He had just finished his show and he was in his dressing room.  Seeing it was Beth, he grabbed it right away.  "Hello."

"Jon?"

"Yeah babe?" he can hear that she's crying.  "Are you okay?  Are the girls okay?"

"They're gone.  Jon, they're gone."  And she just lets go.

"Where are you?"

"Still at the doctors office.  They couldn't find their heartbeats and there was no blood flow through the cord."

"I'm on my way.  I'm in Seattle.  I'll be there soon.  Go home and I'll meet you there."

"I moved.  Address is 4322 Malibu Beach Drive.  This is my number." and she cries some more.  Her cries are tearing him up.  He needed to get there and get there as soon as possible.

"I'll be there, babe.  I'm on my way."

"Okay." and she hangs up.

Backstage, Jon can't stay upright.  His knees are weak and he feels like he wants to vomit and punch something at the same time.  He slides down the wall, and lands next to some gear.  He sits there and asks God, "Why?  Why do you keep doing this to her?"
