Water Ch. 27 - Keep The Faith 2011

Jon finished with the song he was writing in his office and powered everything off.  It was time for Romeo to get in the shower and get ready for bed.  If he stayed up too much later and Dorothea heard about it, she might come unglued.  He doesn't like when she comes unglued.  She's harmless and it's quite entertaining, he just doesn't like that it takes so long for the glue to dry when someone tries to put her back together.  She had so little control over anything in her life, due to her own behavior.  Jon would often let her feel like she was in control of minor things or things of no consequence.

Walking down the hall Jon says, "Romy, come on bud - it's time to get ready for bed."  Jon taps on the wall as he walks.  The walls are lined with pictures of his family, or the family he once knew.  Pictures of the children, Dot and the kids, Jon and Dot, Jon's mom and dad, brothers, etc.  It's the Hall of Bongiovi and it took years to build those walls.  How can he let anyone else live in this house?  I can't sell this house, he thinks to himself.

He loves all of the pictures, even the ones of him and Dorothea.  Just because he wants a divorce, that doesn't mean that he doesn't love her.  He just can't be with her.  He doesn't want to be with her.

Romeo yells, "Ok, dad.  When a commercial comes on, okay?"  Walking into the living room, Jon said, "That's fine.  Do you want a snack?  It's been a while since we ate with gram."  Romeo just shook his head no and Jon sat there and watched his son, watch television.  Jon seen so much of himself in Romeo.  Mannerisms and the perfectionism is the most notable.  Romeo is very passionate about the way things should be done, and he has no problem voicing it.  People often forget that he's only 7.  Most people would attribute his smarts and advanced behaviors to Dorothea, but over the last few years Jon is seeing that it's actually a result of a great nanny and his older brothers and sister.  Jon is not proud of this fact, as he wishes he was in all of their lives more, but what they were doing was working.  When Jon and Beth were together, Jon believes his kids were the happiest then.  And he's not the only one that has seen that or said that.  All four kids loved Beth and they went through their own grieving process when she was no longer in their life.

Romeo was a boy of his word.  He told his dad he would get in the shower when a commercial came on and he did just that.  He gets up and walks passed his dad, giving his dad a high five.  Romeo goes upstairs and Jon follows him up.  Romeo gets his pajamas and clean underwear and heads into his shower.  His bathroom is decorated in MLB garb and he loves it.  Baseball is his favorite, but he likes to go to football games with his dad.  Romeo finishes his shower and finds his dad in his bedroom.  Romeo being a little wiser than he is old asks his dad where Beth is.  Jon puts out his hands to pick up his son so he can put him on his lap and begins to tell Romeo, "Sometimes people that want to be together, can't be together.  It doesn't mean that we don't want to be together, but right now we can't be.  If seeing her today makes you confused, let's talk about it, okay?"  Romeo leans back on his dad and asks, "Why did Beth visit mom?"  Jon will never lie to his children.  He tells Romeo, "Beth wanted your mom to know that she isn't the reason that your mother and I are fighting.  I don't mean fighting like hitting each other, but as you know - your mom and I aren't getting along.  Beth wanted your mom to know that she is not the reason."

"Why would mom think she was?"  Romeo is getting confused and Jon can see it.  But Jon remains honest with his son.

"Let me see if I can explain this so you understand, big people talk can sometimes be so confusing. Ok, I was with Beth the other night and your mom tried to call me.  Since I didn't answer my phone and your mom heard I was with Beth, your mom thought that Beth is the reason I didn't answer my phone.  Does that make sense?" he looks at his son to see if it was clicking, and it appeared to be.  Jon continues, "Your mom isn't happy with me right now and that's okay.  But you should know that we love you like we always have and we will do what's best for you, your brothers and sister."  Romeo reaches back and puts his arms around his dad's head.  He's getting to the point of being silly, so Jon redirects his attention and says, "Romy, do you have any questions?  Is there something you want to know?"

Romeo is kicking his legs back and forth and he watches his legs while he thinks if he has any questions.  He quickly turns to his dad and says, "Yeah, can I sleep with  you?"

Jon chuckles and says, "Of course, but you gotta get in bed now.  It's late." Romeo jumps down and pulls down the blankets on the bed.

Jon says, "Hey, aren't you forgetting something?' smiling at his baby.  His last born.  Romeo runs over and gives his dad a hug and a kiss and says, "Goodnight dad.  I love you."

"That's not it, go brush your teeth silly.  And I love you too!"  Romeo runs back into his bathroom, brushes his teeth and zooms back in to dad's room and jump in dads bed.  In dads spot.  Jon walks over and tucks his son in,  Kisses him on the forehead and says, "Goodnight son, I love you!"  Romeo said, "Night daddy.  I love you too."

"I'll be in the living room if you need me, okay.  I won't be long, dad's pretty pooped today.  I need to make a few phone calls and then I'll come lay down with you, okay."  He assures his son he is going to be close.

"Ok, dad." Romeo tells his dad as he rolls ever and faces away from Jon. "I'm tired."  He says through a yawn.  Jon leaves the room and turns the light off.  Jon goes down stairs and gets his day planner from his office.  Taking it back into the living room, he turns his cell phone back on.  He had texted Mike earlier to see if he delivered that package to Beth, but turned his phone off to not be interrupted while he was writing.  When his iphone powered back on, there was a text from Mike and many others.  He was only concerned about the one from Mike.

Mike's text read, package delivered at 7:30.  Jon's heart sank.  He looked at the time on his phone, it's now 9:00pm.  Why hasn't she called if she has the package?  He thought for sure that would open the gate for communication.  He wants her to know that he's hurt too.  He's suffered loss and McKenna is always on his mind and in his heart.

He thinks he's about to go into panic mode, why didn't she call?  Is she thinking that I did this to be malicious or mean.  I just wanted her to know that I had a hard time with the loss of her and McKenna, I had those things for my own piece of mind.  I needed memento's too.  I needed pieces of the life that I wanted that I had to let go of.  I wanted her and I wanted to have a family with her.  How can I make her see this?  Her being in Red Bank was the act of a higher power, I am convinced of this.

He needed to make a few calls, but he really didn't want to.  He wanted to go into the city and see Beth.  There isn't much more that he wants, other than that.

He gives Richie a call, Richie is on the east coast for a family function and he and Jon were going to get together tomorrow and write a song or two.  Whenever they are in the same time zone, they make it a point to get together and collaborate.  They have always worked so well together and the distraction would do Jon some good.  Talking to someone, other than a 7 year old, would help too.  He and Richie plan on meeting at Jon's place, they'll just use Jon's studio for now.

His next call is to the Hampton's to check on the rest of the Bongiovi children.  All are accounted for and where they are supposed to be and Jon knows this,  because his drunk, soon to be ex wife told him so.  He hears the slur in her words and he's done.  "Goodbye Dorothea, I'll talk to you tomorrow.  Don't forget Romeo has day school, so make sure you're there to get him when school is done."

He hangs up the phone and call the other three children on his own.  Stephanie will be back at dad's tomorrow, she can't stand being with her mom.  Jesse wants to stay out in the Hampton's because there is a cute girl out there.  Jake thinks he wants to go to Red Bank, but he'll let his dad know tomorrow. Jon tells all three that he loves them very much and all of the madness should be over soon.  They know what he's talking about.  Dorothea told everyone that Jon and his girlfriend served her divorce papers.  Dorothea took every opportunity to bash Jon and now that Beth is back in the 'picture' she bashes her too.  No one is free from the tongue of Dot.

Jon walks around and turns off all of the lights and sets the alarm system and heads to bed, to be close to his son.

He lies there awake for what feels like hours. He used to sleeping alone, he's been doing it for over a year but tonight was different.

He reached our to Beth and she didn't reach back. Is she really gone forever. She has to know they are meant to be together. She has too. She has to see that her deciding to visit Red Bank was influenced by something greater than them. She's a spiritual woman and she believes in her faith, so she has to believe in Jon. Right.

He laid there and went from tossing and turning to wiring lyrics in his head. Tapping his foot and ultimately getting out of bed and going down into his office. He moves the picture on the wall and spins the combination on the safe. His safe. The safe no one else had the combination to.

The safe where he keeps all of his personal things that mean something to him. No one knows what things he keeps in there. The things in there are important legal documents, never before heard music and little things from important times in his life. He too, had a home pregnancy test stick from when he and Beth found out they were going to have a baby. They were so happy, they took a few tests confirming it. Having the test sticks may be odd to some, but it meant the world to Jon. It was proof of their love and he will never let that stuff go. There are pictures in there of he and Beth. Them and the kids, the whole family - Beth was very important to the Bongiovi's. She made Jon happy and that's all they wanted. His struggles in the beginning breaking into the music business, the struggles with Dot and just the typical struggles with life, Jon finally deserved some true happiness. He had all the money he could ever need, he had the finer things in life, four perfect children - but what good is it if you ain't got love?

Jon pulled out a book. It was a journal Beth kept while she was pregnant. In it there were notes to Jon and notes to their unborn baby girl. Beth would right in that thing for hours and hours and never let Jon read it. She always told him that if anything happens to her, while she believes they would be together forever, please make sure you read that to McKenna. She wanted her to know how much her parents were in love. How they couldn't be together as a family and how she feels and thinks throughout her pregnancy. Beth wanted McKenna to know the truth. The whole truth! How ever ugly it was.

Jon sat at his desk and read a passage date December 24th, 2008. It was towards the back of the book so it was one of the last entries she made. It read, Baby Girl Bongiovi, you are to arrive in 12 weeks and I can't not put into words how excited I am to finally meet you. You have been a part of me for the last 27 weeks and I am ready for you to meet your daddy.  He plays with your feet and your hands, when you're restless and poking out my belly, and sometimes I think your little bottom, depending on how you're positioned.  Today your daddy and I went to the doctor and got to see you. We heard your heartbeat and we let the doctor tell us how perfect you are! Baby Girl Bongiovi you are going to have a wonderful life. You have 3 brothers and one sister, and they are all very excited to meet you too.  Your daddy is probably as excited as I am to meet you. He talks to you every day, he tells you silly stories, he's been known to read you the New York Times. He loves to sing to you, he has written a song for you. When you meet your daddy, you will feel how much he loves you. You, Baby Girl Bongiovi will be the apple of his eye and you have no idea what you mean to him. When you were conceived, I knew immediately and your daddy thought I was crazy. But I knew! I waited my whole life for you and you are my miracle! Baby Girl Bongiovi, I love you and so does your daddy - we will be seeing you soon! Love Mom

Jon sat at his desk and sobbed. How could he have been so manipulated, so deceived.  How could he let his one true love, his soul, his inspiration go.  How could he have done that?

  1. Ugh, please stop teasing with all these little pieces of McKenna and tell us what happened to her!
Who manipulated Jon? Was it Dorothea or Beth? I need answers. Lol

    Romeo is adorable.

  2. The miss carriage needs to be explained. All their children were born alive so where does it come in?
